A
late two goal salvo from the evergreen Micky
O'Callaghan helped Little Common
continue their impressive run and clock up their
ninth consecutive win on Saturday to overcome
East Preston 4-3 at the Lashmar. On a dry and
bumpy pitch Common had the better of the opening
exchanges with Lewis Hole hitting a post then
bar in the same attack before Steve Mote saw
a header cleared off the line. However, it was
the hosts who opened the scoring when a rare
venture into the Common half saw Budge give
time and space to turn and shoot from the edge
of the area beyond the diving Richie Gray. Common
continued to press the home defence and thought
that they had equalised when Hole smashed home
from eight yards but the linesman flag came
to the home side's rescue. The equaliser came
in the 22nd minute when a long kick from Gray
was flicked on by the hard working Steve Morris
to Jared Lusted who made no mistake beating
the keeper at his near post. The same player
was involved in the second goal when he tricked
his way into the area before being upended leaving
Hole to slot home the penalty and give Common
a 2-1 half time lead. East Preston began the
second half the better team as they looked to
get back into the match and were duly rewarded
in the 52nd minute when Budge fired in his second
goal from the edge of the area. Common began
to get back into the match and Hole saw an effort
saved by the keeper before Andy Matthews saw
an effort saved at the near post. With fifteen
minutes remaining a good passing move saw Matthews
find the marauding O'Callaghan in the penalty
area and cool chip over the onrushing keeper
saw Common regain the lead. The hosts were soon
level, however, when a poorly defended free-kick
saw Huet pick up the loose ball before beating
two players on the edge of the area and firing
past an unsighted Gray. With time running out
it looked as if Common's fine run of wins would
finally come to an end until O'Callaghan once
again popped up in the area to score an almost
identical goal to that of his first.
Squad: Gray, O'Callaghan, Humphrey,
Funnell, Steward, S.Mote, R.Mote (Lister), Matthews,
Hole, Morris, Lusted (May).
